Facebook is changing the way it ranks organic posts that are eligible to show up in its users’ News Feeds.
Josh Leichtung's insight:
Huh? Its about time!
Facebook is now using what they call "Story Bumping" and "Last Actor" to determine what you see in your Facebook news feed. This will have a significant effect on marketers as well as Facebook users.
This is fascinating, because I would have assumed that Facebook would have already been using Last Actor and Story Bumping in their news feed algorithm. This indicates to me that Facebook is nowhere near as sophisticated as they should be, and that they have huge room for improving the Facebook newsfeed. Great from a personal point of view, but it does take make my impression of Facebook's technology down a few notches. Several.
BTW marketers, EdgeRank as a term is dead (and has been for two and half years). The concept lives on. For those of you who don't know, EdgeRank was used to determine what went into your newsfeed. However, affinity, weight, and time decay (the factors determining EdgeRank) are still used today.
What do you think? Does it suprise you that Facebook is just now starting to use Story Bumping and Last Actor to determine what goes into your newsfeed?
Opinions please!
